Roberto Lupini

Role

Roberto joined Omnia in November 2021. He is an experienced public international law practitioner who represents Sovereigns, corporates and private clients. Experienced before the  International Court of Justice (ICJ) and has been involved in over a dozen investment treaty arbitrations under ICSID and UNCITRAL rules. Roberto has also represented multiple parties in commercial arbitration proceedings under the ICC and other rules.

Career

Roberto spent six years at a high profile public international law boutique and prior to that spent four years at a global law firm, where he advised on contentious and non-contentious public international law and international dispute resolution matters.

Roberto has acted on a wide range of public international law issues including boundary disputes, international humanitarian law, the laws of war, international criminal law, human rights, State responsibility, State succession, Statehood, treaty law, international organisations, the exploitation of natural resources in disputed territories, international arbitration and the protection of foreign investments. Recent highlights of his practice include representing States in five proceedings before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), successfully defending an award in excess of half a billion US Dollars in an ICSID annulment proceeding and defeating a multi-billion US Dollar ICSID arbitration brought against an African State.  He has also acted for a European State in four ICSID arbitration proceedings and for an African State in a high-profile ICSID arbitration involving human rights.

Qualifications

Roberto holds a law degree from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in Venezuela and an LL.M from the University of Chicago. In 2011 he was admitted to practice law in Venezuela. Roberto is fluent in Spanish, Italian and English and holds a basic working knowledge of French. He appears and speaks at conferences as well as being published in several areas.
