Role

Bernardo is an experienced Associate who specialises in investor-state arbitration and international commercial disputes. His practice includes acting for States and State entities, corporates and private investors across a broad range of sectors under major institutional arbitration and ad hoc rules, including ICSID, ICC, UNCITRAL, LCIA, and CAC.

Career

Bernardo has worked in his native Portugal and the United Kingdom representing clients in high-stakes, complex cases as well as in Lusophone African jurisdictions, notably Angola, Mozambique and Cape Verde. The subject matter of Bernardo’s cases spans energy, finance hospitality, export, shipping, infrastructure, TMT and oil & gas amongst others.

Highlights include representing a Portuguese State entity against a bank, owned by a foreign investor, in three high-profile ICC arbitrations relating to the interpretation of a Contingent Capital Agreement in the context of the resolution of a financial institution and a Portuguese electricity generator in an ICC arbitration concerning tax treatment under a Power Purchase Agreement.

Qualifications

Bernardo is a Portuguese-qualified lawyer. He obtained his law degree from the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Lisboa and holds an LL.M. in Business Law, awarded by the London School of Economics. In addition to fluent English & Portuguese, Bernardo has professional knowledge of Italian and basic working knowledge of Spanish. He is currently studying the SQE in order to be admitted in England and Wales.
