Landmark settlement agreement between Ambassador Bridgette Motsepe and the new Government of Botswana.
1st July 2025
Landmark settlement agreement between Ambassador Bridgette Motsepe and the new Government of Botswana comprehensively vindicates the Ambassador after years of fighting to clear her name
The new Government of Botswana has now publicly disavowed the false and politically-motivated claims against the Ambassador in the so-called ‘Butterfly Case’, committed to investigate the circumstances surrounding their fabrication, and issued an unreserved apology.
The brings long-overdue closure to a case that falsely accused the Ambassador and others of involvement in a fictitious USD 10 billion money laundering scheme – part of a broader campaign and the weaponisation of the judicial system by the former administration, targeting political and business figures (including former President Ian Khama).
Omnia is proud to have advised Ambassador Motsepe and contributed to securing this successful outcome – one that not only restores and further enhances her reputation, but reaffirms the principles of the rule of law, institutional accountability, and the protection of innocent victims from the political misuse of legal systems.
The Omnia team – led by Cherie Blair CBE, KC & James Palmer and including Adam Smith-Anthony, Lauren Lederle, and Ben Wheadon – demonstrated the firm’s Law+ capability, combining legal expertise, political acumen, and diplomatic engagement, while working across multiple jurisdictions to expose the truth and protect the Ambassador’s interests.
